Current Legislative Bills Affecting Children and Youth in Maine

  • From the 123rd Maine Legislature: LD 63, Resolve Chapter 211, signed on April 18th, 2008, entitled "Resolve, to Study Ways to Increase Access to AfterSchool Programs."
    Directs the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, to gather information pertaining to methods to establish and fund Afterschool programs in communities that lack Afterschool programs, and to report results to the Joint Standing Committee of the Legislature for Educational and Cultural Affairs in January 2009.   • From the 110th Congress 2nd Session, Investment in AfterSchool Programs Act of 2008
    Submitted by Senator Blanche Lincoln and co-sponsored by Senator Susan Collins. Bill constitutes an amendment to Subtitle D of the "Consolidated Farm and Rural Development Act," to be inserted after Section 365 (7 USC 2008). This bill seeks to establish, improve and expand access to after-school programs (including all out-0f-school-time programming for students) in rural areas through grant of $50,000 or more for 3 or more years, to be awarded competitively to a broad range of organizational types, including but not limited to schools, non-profits, and consortia of organizations. Seeks $500,000,000 over five years for this pilot program.
